Jake Paul approaches his next opponent after Mike Tyson fight
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has claimed he has been offered a fight with Jake Paul.
Paul defeated 58-year-old Mike Tyson on points earlier this month in a controversial boxing fight which broke records but which has been widely condemned for its lack of action. Tyson barely threw a punch after the opening round and Paul later admitted to taking it easy against the former undisputed heavyweight world champion.
Paul is targeting a return to the ring between March and May next year and former world champion Chavez Jr has claimed he has been approached. The Mexican has won 54 of his 61 fights but has only fought once since 2021 – a boring points win over former UFC star Uriah Hall on the undercard of Paul’s win over Mike Perry in July.
Paul has insisted he wants to win a world title and a fight with Chavez Jr could be sanctioned for a title by the WBA. The sanctioning body’s president Gilberto Mendoza said in the aftermath of Paul’s win over Tyson: “I will insist. [I would] love to see Jake Paul vs [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr for a championship.”

Given neither Paul nor Chavez Jr are ranked by the WBA, it is likely Mendoza means a minor title which would allow Paul to be ranked and therefore compete for a full world title in the future. The 27-year-old has already made it clear he wants to fight Canelo Alvarez, saying before he fought Tyson: “This moment will prove I’m the face of boxing, the largest attraction and me vs. Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight, arguably even bigger than me vs. Tyson, and it makes so much sense.
“Canelo is on his way out. He’s going to want a payday and I want to show the world all the (stuff) I’ve been talking about beating Canelo is actually true and I’ll have the biggest upset in the history of boxing. We’ll fight to really see who is the face because after this event, I’m going to be claiming it.”
